Supreme Court lashes out at farmers’ group, says they have ‘strangulated’ Delhi

New Delhi: A farmers’ group that had approached the Supreme Court to seek permission for a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar ended up facing the ire of the Apex Court instead. The SC lashed out at them saying they had “strangulated the entire capital” (Delhi).

Making a strong observation, the court said that the farmers had blocked highways and roads and strangulated the city. “Now you want to come inside the city and protest,” the bench of justices AM Khanwilkar and CT Ravikumar said while hearing a plea by Kisan Mahapanchayat, a group of farmers and agriculturists. The petitioners had sought permission to protest peacefully against the three farm laws at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

It may be recalled that Delhi borders had witnessed heavy traffic jam due to the protest by farmers.

Citizens have equal rights to move freely and without fear, the court observed.

It noted that after approaching the courts, the farmers should have faith in them. “Pursue that for urgent hearing instead of protesting,” it said.

The petitioners argued that it was the police that had blocked the highways and that they were asking for permission to protest at Jantar Mantar, just like Sanyukta Kisan Morcha. The SC has asked them to file an affidavit stating that they are not part of any ongoing protest that is blocking the city borders. It has posted the matter for October 4.
