New Delhi: In a major relief to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, the Delhi High Court cleared him of all charges related to the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.
The order was passed by Special Judge Geetanjali Goel in a virtual hearing.
Sunanda Pushkar and Shashi Tharoor got married in 2010. It was the third marraige for both of them.
Sunanda was found dead in a room of the Leela Palace hotel on January 17, 2014. Initially, it was suspected that she had died by suicide. But later, autopsy report showed injuries on her body. However, doctors said the injuries may or may not have caused the death. Later, in October 2014, the medical team said she died of poisoning. In January 2015, the Delhi police claimed she was murdered and filed an FIR.
In May 2018, Tharoor was charged with abetment to Sunanda Pushkar’s suicide and marital cruelty, allegations that he has refuted all the while.
Tharoor thanks the judges
After the judgment, Shashi Tharoor issued a statement thanking Judge Geetanjali Goel. “This brings a significant conclusion to the long nightmare which had enveloped me after the tragic passing of my late wife Sunanda… the fact that justice has been done, at last, will allow all of us in the family to mourn Sunanda in peace,” Tharoor said in his statement.
