SSNNL begins levelling ground near Statue of Unity amid protest

  • Work on construction of parking lot opposition Kevadia railway station started with police protection.

Vishal Mistry, Rajpipla: Amid strong protests by the local residents, the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) has commenced work on construction of parking area in front of the Kevadia railway station. The work of levelling the ground for the purpose began on Saturday amid police protection. This even led to clashes between the SSNNL representatives and the locals.

Recently, a few women had got into arguments with SSNNL authorities when the latter initiated land survey work opposite the railway station. One of the women even began to take off her sari to stop the officials from going ahead with the work. The matter had been brought under control by women police personnel at the site. A complaint had been lodged against a group of 15-20 persons in this case.

SSNNL has begun ground-levelling work on plot survey numbers 447, 449, 472 and 473. The officials had sought police protection to deal with likely opposition from the locals. To prevent the villagers from coming out and protest, cops had been deployed outside their homes in Kevadia village.

‘Our only source of income gone; government did not compensate’

One of the families that has been claiming ownership of the land where SSNNL is constructing the parking lot said they have lost their only source of income. According to them, the government had taken away the land without compensating them for it.

Confirming the construction of a parking lot on the land, Narmada deputy collector Nikunj Parikh said, “I had held around 10 meetings with this family in the past. I had urged for the legal heir to give consent to receiving compensation. But till now, they have not done so. How can we then pay them the compensation amount? I had met residents of six villages, including Kevadia.”
