Sri Lanka navy captures Indian vessels, 11 fishermen


Colombo: The Sri Lankan navy captured as many as 11 fishermen, along with their trawlers, after they allegedly ventured in the Lankan waters.

As per a statement by the Sri Lankan navy, they had taken “hold” of 3 Indian trawlers that were “poaching” in their territory.

The statement said that on the night of February 7, the personnel seized three Indian trawlers close to the Delft Island in Jaffna as well as 11 fishermen on board the vessels.

Earlier too, Sri Lanka has seized Indian vessels and captured fishermen accusing them of poaching in its territory.

Recently, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had written to PM Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in reported auction of TN fishermen’s vessels by the Sri Lankan government.

Meanwhile, the officials of the Consulate General in Jaffna met the 11 fishermen and extended various forms of immediate consular assistance such as emergency relief materials and phone calls to family members.
