Even as the state battles the Covid19 pandemic, an earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale was recorded in several parts of Saurashtra. Earlier the region had also seen unseasonal rain that was expected to bring untold damage to agriculture.
Junagadh, Gir, Somnath and Porbandar were some of the regions that recorded mild tremors sending the citizens into panic mode. The tremors were reported in the afternoon, when most people were at home. The lockdown kept the residents within their house although in Saurashtra it is common for people to go for a siesta in the afternoon. The tremors brought the panicky residents running out of their homes. The epicentre for the earthquake was 44 km from Mangrol. No loss of life or property was reported following the tremors.
Earlier in mid-January last year, four earthquakes in a matter of seven hours were reported from the Saurashtra and Kutch region. The epicentre was 8 km from Bhachau in Kutch. The tremors ranged from 1.4 on the Richter scale to 4.1. Of the four tremors, two had epicentre in and around Kutch while one was near Surendranagar and another near Una.
