Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine which is being imported will cost Rs995.40 in India, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories announced on Friday. The price of the two-dose vaccine includes 5% GST. The vaccine has an efficacy of 91.6% and is the third vaccine after COVISHIELD and COVAXIN to be approved for emergency use in India. Its efficacy is higher than the other two vaccines that are in use in India.
The price of the vaccine is likely to go down when Sputnik V is manufactured in India. The vaccine, which was imported in India on May 1, will be available in the country from next week.
Earlier, the Lancet had questioned the lack of transparency in the phase 3 trials of the vaccine which the manufacturers had countered by stating that the clinical trial data were transparent.
The vaccine is priced at $10 per dose and has already been administered to over 20 lakh people.
Dr Reddy’s had carried out clinical trials of the vaccine in India that is originally manufactured by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF). The first dose of the vaccine was administered in Hyderabad.
“The imported doses of the vaccine are presently priced at an MRP of Rs 948 + 5 percent GST per dose, with the possibility of a lower price point when local supply begins. The Company is working closely with its six manufacturing partners in India to fulfill regulatory requirements to ensure smooth and timely supply,” the company said in a filing.
The Sputnik vaccine is available in both liquid and powder form. The vaccine will be available at 35 centres across India. The vaccines at present are imported from Russia ready to administer.
