Six death in two days: Labour dept issues notice to shut two factories in Ahmedabad

The labour and employment department of Gujarat has ordered the closure of two factories after six labourers were killed in two separate incidents in Ahmedabad. One of the incidents happened at Vishal Fabric factory in Dholka taluka and another at Shri Shakti Chemical factory in Vatva.

A release from the department said that the Director Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) issued a closure order against the two factories on Sunday after a preliminary probe showed that safety protocols were flooded.

Vishal Meena and Nandlal Meena died and Rahul Meena was critical after the trio inhaled noxious gases when they entered to clean a tank in Shri Shakti Chemical Factory in Vatva on Friday.

Four workers —Vijay Barad, Prabhu Jamod, Mayur Barad and Pravin Rathod died after they entered an Effluent Treatment Process (ETP) tank at Vishal Fabrics Limited in Dholi village under Dholka taluka.

“Preliminary inquiry has shown that the workers were not provided safety equipment at both the plants. We have issued a closure order to them under the Factories Act so that lives of other workers are not put at risk. We have also registered an FIR against Vishal Fabrics for the incident,” said Vipul Mittra, additional chief secretary, Labour and Employment department.

Mittra said that both companies have been asked to ex-gratia compensation to the next of kin of the deceased workers immediately.
