- Under fire for removing armed personnel from singer’s security cover Mann government concedes to demand by murdered singer’s family
Chandigarh: A day after the murder of popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, his family demanded that the investigation be handed over to the CBI or the NIA. They also demanded fixing of responsibility on officers who leaked the letter about the withdrawal of the singer’s security.
Conceding to the demand, the Punjab government has said it will request the Chief Justice of Punjab to “get the case enquired into by the sitting judge” of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Sidhu Moosewala, also a Congress leader, was shot dead by assailants when he was travelling in his car in Jawaharke village of Mansa district in Punjab on Sunday.
He was murdered a day after the Bhagwant Mann-led government withdrew the two armed personnel from his security cover. He was not in his bulletproof car, instead travelling in another car.
After his murder, Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, an associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, claimed responsibility for the murder.
CM orders inquiry into security reduction
CM Bhagwant Mann, as per a press release, has ordered an inquiry at the highest level to inquire into the aspects of security reduction and to fix the responsibility. He has also directed the Punjab DGP to issue a clarification regarding his press conference on Sunday about the incident. He reportedly presented the killing like a gang war.
The police had said that two of the four commandos assigned to Sidhu Moosewala had been taken back to free personnel for security arrangements ahead of the anniversary of Operation Bluestar next month.
Opposition parties lash out at AAP government
The murder put the AAP-led Punjab government at the receiving end of severe criticism.
Opposition parties and others criticised the state government for reducing Sidhu Moosewala’s security cover without a proper analysis of the threat perception, as well as publicising the curtailment of security.
The Punjab Congress tweeted on Monday, “Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu Moosewala Ji’s blood is on your hands Mr. Chief Minister @BhagwantMann and the sad part is instead of being remorseful your party @AamAadmiParty choose to blame the victim for his death by labelling his daylight murder a Gang war.”
BJP leader Tajinder Pal Bagga blamed AAP for the collapse of law and order in Punjab.
Meanwhile, massive protests were held in Delhi, Punjab and Jammu over the murder.
