At a time when thousands of migrants across the country are trying to return to their hometowns amid nationwide lockdown over coronavirus or COVID-19, a shocking video has emerged from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district, about 270 km from Lucknow, that shows a batch of migrants being sprayed by disinfectants.

In the video, some men in protective gear are seen spraying disinfectants on a group of migrants, including women and children, sitting on the road. The batch had returned to UP over the weekend after special buses were arranged for them. Among the spectators are some policemen.

A man can be heard saying in the clip: “Apni ankhen band kar lo. Bacchon ki ankhen band kar lo (please shut your eyes, also close eyes of the kids)”.

“We did not mean to be inhuman. It was important to sanitise everyone and there was a rush. So we did what we thought was best,” said an official.

The video has gone viral on social media and attracted a lot of criticism for the Uttar Pradesh authorities for the treatment meted out to the migrants.
