New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has asked both the factions of Shiv Sena—led by Uddhav Thackeray and Eknanth Shinde respective—to submit documentary proof to back their claim to the election symbol of the party.

The ECI has sent the letter written by Shinde faction to Thackeray and the one written by the latter to Shinde. It has asked them to file their replies by August 8.

Shinde, while separating from Thackeray, had said that he was a follower of Balasaheb Thackeray. He and other rebel MLAs formed their own faction and allied with the BJP to form the new government in Maharashtra.

Both the groups claim to be the real Shiv Sena and that their leaders is the party supremo.

The Shinde faction also laid claim to the party’s ‘bow and arrow’ symbol and has filed petitions under the Election Symbols (Reservation & Allotment) Order 1968 under which factions can claim the party symbol after proving their majority.

The EC has now directed both the factions to furnish all documents to prove their majority by August 8.
