In what would add to the troubles of Twitter India managing director Manish Maheshwari, an FIR has been filed again him in Uttar Pradesh for an incorrect political map of India that showed Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as a separate country. Maheshwari has been already booked by the UP Police in another case related to a viral video of a Muslim man getting assaulted by a group.
The distorted map was available on the ‘Tweep Life’ section and was flagged by a Twitter user that resulted in a huge outrage against the US-based social media giant.
Bajrang Dal leader files FIR
“This act of treason has been committed intentionally and action should be taken,” reads the complaint filed by right-wing group Bajrang Dal’s leader Praveen Bhati. The case has been filed under Section 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code (creating or promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will between classes) and Section 74 of IT (Amendment) Act 2008.
“The complainant said when he was using Twitter, he came across the incorrect map of India, which didn’t have Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. This, he said, has hurt his sentiments and of other Indians. Relevant action will be taken. Two senior officials of Twitter have been named in the complaint,” police officer Suresh Kumar told the media.
FIR against Twitter employee
Amrita Tripathi, who also works with Twitter India, has also been named in the complaint filed in UP’s Bulandshahr, about 100 km from Delhi. She tweeted a clarification on her role, hours after the complaint was filed.
She said, “So is this a good time to clarify my role at my day job? As good a time as any? Presently on the content partnerships team at Twitter (in India). No spl powers/ authority and definitely not at the level some of you think (but thanks, I guess).”
