New Delhi: In some relief to Congress leader Hardik Patel, who was the face of the Patidar agitation of 2015, the Supreme Court has stayed his conviction in the matter of rioting and arson during the agitation.

The court has ordered for the stay on conviction until the appeals are decided in the case related to an FIR in 2015 against Hardik Patel after the Patidar agitation.

Patel had moved the plea before the Supreme Court against the judgment of Gujarat High Court seeking suspension of the conviction so that he could contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

He had got bail from a trial court in Ahmedabad in January 2020, but was barred from leaving the state without court’s permission. He challenged the order in HC, but lost.

He then approached the SC which has called the trial court’s order “highly onerous and disproportionate”.

The SC bench of Justice S Abdul Nazeer and Justice Vikram Nath. while passing the order, noted that the conviction should have been stayed by the Gujarat HC itself.
