SC raps Nupur Sharma for her comments, refuses to entertain plea

  • Fresh petition in SC seeks withdrawal of Justice Kant’s observations on Nupur Sharma

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday came down heavily on former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her controversial comments, blaming her for the repercussions of her words. The court also refused to entertain her plea seeking transfer of all FIRs against her to the Apex court. However, Justice Surya Kant’s observations stoked fresh controversy in the case.

Justice Kant said that Nupur Sharma was single-handedly responsible for what was happening in the country, referring to the violence, protests and the killing of a tailor in Udaipur.

“What is her business to make these remarks?… The way she has ignited emotions across the country… this lady is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country,” the court observed.

“She should apologise to the whole country,” Justice Kant remarked.

The case had come up before the vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala. The bench dismissed the petition, allowing the petitioner “the liberty to avail the alternate remedies available under the law”.

Shortly thereafter, a fresh petition was filed in the SC requesting the court to withdraw the observations made by Justice Kant in the case earlier in the day.
