New Delhi: Lakhs of students who had appeared for the National Entrance cum Eligibility Test (NEET) for admission to undergraduate medical courses this year can now heave a sigh of relief. The Supreme Court has stayed a Bombay High Court order to hold NEET again for two candidates.

The HC had ordered NTA to conduct the exam afresh for two candidates, Vaishanavi Bhopali and Abhishek Shivaji who had alleged that they had been given question papers and answer sheets with wrong serial numbers.

The Centre had challenged the Bombay HC order and stated that it was unable to release the result for lakhs of students even though it was ready. This would affect the undergraduate medical admissions. While challenging the order, it had argued that the order could be misused in future.

The SC bench asked why only two out of six students had a problem. To this, their lawyers said that the others did not realize the mistake.

The bench later directed the NTA to release the results of NEET UG exams, saying there were 16 lakh candidates waiting eagerly for their results. “We will see what we can do for the two students,” it said.

The matter has been posted for November 12.
