The Supreme Court has taken a big decision on the petition of RTI activist Subhash Chandra Agarwal. On the petitions challenging the decision of the Delhi High Court to bring the Chief Justice’s office under the purview of the Right to Information Act, the Supreme Court today upheld the Delhi High Court decision and brought the Office of CJI under the purview of RTI. Further said that Transparency does not underestimate Judicial Independence. It was also said in the High Court decision that the post of Chief Justice comes under the purview of Right to Information.

A five-judge constitution bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi announced the verdict at 2 pm today. Other members of the bench were Justice NV Ramana, Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjiv Khanna. The judgment notice was made publicly on the official website of the Supreme Court on Tuesday afternoon.
