- He is only the third person in the company’s history to hold the position after Bill Gates and John Thompson
Washington DC: Microsoft Corp.’s chief executive officer Satya Nadella has been named the board chairman, the company has said in a statement.
Indian-American Nadella succeeds John Thompson (72) who will be back to being the lead independent director, a post he had held before becoming chairman in 2014, as per a statement by Microsoft.
The 53-year-old was appointed CEO of Microsoft in February 2014. Around that time, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates stepped down from the post of chairman. He was replaced by Thompson.
Nadella is credited with Microsoft’s rebirth after failure in the mobile phone and internet search market and reducing importance of its Windows operating system. He refocused it around cloud computing, mobile applications and artificial intelligence and resurrected the Office software franchise by shifting it more to the cloud and to other operating systems.
Nadella will be the third chairman of Microsoft, after Gates and Thompson. He was also the company’s third CEO.
According to Microsoft’s statement, Thompson will remain active as lead independent director and oversee Nadella’s compensation, succession planning, governance and board operations.
