Melbourne: Tennis star Sania Mirza has announced her plan to retire from professional tennis at the end of the 2022 tour season.
The announcement came right after the 35-year-old Indian tennis player, former world number 1 in doubles, bowed out of the women’s doubles with Ukrainian partner Nadiia Kichenok at the Australian Open in the first round itself.
In the post-match conference, she said, “I’ve decided this will be my last season. I’m taking it week by week, not sure if I can last the season, but I want to.”
Sania Mirza started playing professional tennis in 2003 and retired from singles in 2013 after a major wrist injury.
She took a maternity break from the game. Her comeback was delayed by the pandemic.
Sania played in the Tokyo Olympics, her fourth Olympics, with Ankita Raina as her partner, but the pair exited in the first round itself.
