- Former Mumbai cop Sachin Vaze has been accused of massive extortion
Mumbai: Days after Mumbai police was granted the custody of police officer Sachin Vaze by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court, he was produced before the Killa court in Mumbai on Monday. The Mumbai Crime Branch has sought his 10-day custody saying it needs to investigate him further.
Sachin Vaze was arrested in March this year. He was booked under various sections of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
He is also an accused in the bomb scare case where an SUV laden with explosives was found outside the residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani in South Mumbai. Subsequently, Thane businessman Mansukh Hiran, who had reported theft of the SUV used in the case, was found murdered. Vaze was accused in this case as well.
He was subsequently dismissed from services.
In the court on Monday, the Mumbai police argued that Sachin Vaze got the post of Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) after several years of not being in service. They said he was reinstated by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh and together they had been carrying out extortion. Singh is missing currently.
The Mumbai police’s lawyer argued that Vaze used to extort money even when he was not in service.
He alleged that Vaze was using his health as an excuse to avoid questioning and being part of the investigation.
