At a time when the lockdown has crippled movement of people across the country, the Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad has adopted technology to make sure that convicts and under-trials lodged in prison are able to meet their relatives. The jail administration has arranged facilities for e-meetings so that the prisoners can meet their family members over video calls.
The move has been appreciated as prisoners lodged in the jail can ensure that their families outside are safe and have not contracted the deadly coronavirus.
Sabarmati Central Jail’s deputy superintendent DV Rana said it is important to keep the prisoners mentally healthy and meetings with family members are helpful in achieving the same. Since the meetings have been discontinued during the lockdown, we started e-meetings to make sure the prisoners can meet their family members over video calls.
Rana said around 50 prisoners are allowed to meet their family members using video calls on a daily basis and we intend to continue with this system.
