Sabarmati jail inmate, accused in gang rape case, dies by suicide

Ahmedabad: One of the accused in a gang rape case, who had been lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail, allegedly died by suicide in the jail itself. His body was found hanging. Ranip police have lodged a case of accidental death and are investigating it further.

The deceased, Jaimin Patel, was one of the five persons who had been arrested on charges of gang rape of a Rajkot woman. As per case details, the accused had called the woman (23) to Ahmedabad with the promise of providing a job. Once here, the complaint stated, she was taken to places like Udaipur and Abu, where she was forcibly given methamphetamine drugs and raped. Later, she was allegedly blackmailed and raped repeatedly at gunpoint by the accused.

The woman had lodged a complaint at Mahila (west) police station in November last year, following which Jaimin, Pragnesh Patel, Maldev Bharwad, Jignesh Goswami and Neelam Patel were arrested and sent to Sabarmati jail.

Early on Wednesday, Jaimin allegedly hanged self. A suicide note found near him said that he would not be able to get out of jail in the case. He also apologized to his family.

Ranip police rushed to Sabarmati jail on getting to know of the incident. Jaimin’s body was sent for post-mortem.
