Kyiv: A 21-year-old Russian tank commander who was captured by Ukrainian forces was convicted for killing a 62-year-old civilian. The conviction of Sgt Vadim Shishimarin is the first of the war crime trials since the war between the two countries began.

Shishimarin was found guilty of killing Oleksandr Shelipov in a village called Chupakhivka on February 28. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Ukraine.

The soldier admitted to shooting the victim, but said he had been acting on orders.

His lawyer said he had refused twice to fire at the victim, but had to do so out of fear for his own safety.

Russia began its military operations in Ukraine on February 24. Ukraine has accused Russian troops of war crimes and failing to adhere to war rules. The war entered Day 89 on Monday.
