Armed men looted passengers in the Yashwantpur-Ahmedabad train near Solapur and escaped with cash and valuables worth lakhs of rupees.
Eyewitnesses said around 15 to 20 men stopped the train after tampering with the signal in the dead of the night. They then entered four coaches and robbed the passengers.
Reports said since the signal was cut, the mode of transport had to stop and the robbers took advantage of this. The loot had resulted in the train stopping for close to 2.5 hours. Police reached the spot only when the Solapur Range Railway section was informed about e loot.
Passengers told cops that the robbers had put oil on their body and face and had initially pelted stones at the mode of transport.
Police suspect that a gang is behind the incident and Maharashtra police are investigating the matter.
