London: Indian-origin MP Rishi Sunak has been made the new finance minister in the UK government. He has been removed from Pakistan-origin Sajid Javed and given the charge of Finance Minister. Sunak is son-in-law of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy. This position has now become very important in Britain, which has withdrawn from the European Union. This is because Britain has to create a new structure of its trade relations with the other countries of the world. Conservative party MP Sunak from Richmond, Yorkshire, is married to Murthy’s daughter Akshata. He had first reached in Parliament by winning elections in 2015.
Priti Patel, who is of Indian origin continues to hold the post of Home Minister in Britain’s Boris Johnson government and Sunak has got the responsibility of Finance Minister. In such a situation, Indians have occupied two very important posts of the British Government. On Thursday, Prime Minister Johnson expanded his cabinet. Indian origin Alok Sharma and Suella Braverman are also expected to get promotions in the cabinet.
39-year-old Sunak was earlier Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and had the status of Chief Secretary of the British Treasury. He is seen as a rising star of the British government. Downing Street said in the official announcement on the elevation of the three-time MP that, “The Queen has been graciously pleased to approve the appointment of Rt Hon Rishi Sunak as Chancellor of the Exchequer.”
The UK-born Sunak has studied at Oxford and Stanford Universities. His basic profession is that of investment banker. As an investment banker, he had established a global investment firm worth one billion pounds (about nine thousand crore rupees) just before entering politics. Sunak’s mother was a pharmacist while her father was a general practitioner in the UK government health service.
