- Ripun Bora is a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam
New Delhi: The ever-increasing fuel prices, both petrol and diesel, have been one of the points of heated debates and discussions across the country for past several days. The issue has been a major bone of contention in the Parliament as well, with the Opposition taking it up as one of the subjects to corner the ruling party on.
On Thursday, Congress MP in Rajya Sabha Ripun Bora rode a cycle to the Parliament to register his protest against the high prices of petrol and diesel. He is also the president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.
In the recent past, Ripun Bora has protested against the prohibitively high prices of the fuels in Assam, as have many other Congress leaders in different parts of the country.
Currently, the monsoon session of the Parliament is in progress. Since the start of the session on July 19, neither Lok Sabha nor Rajya Sabha has been able to have an uninterrupted day of discussions, with the Opposition MPs raising loud protests over issues like high fuel prices, farm laws, Pegasus snooping, etc.
On Monday, petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri, while briefing the Lok Sabha about the fuel prices, had said that the prices were dergulated in 2010 during the UPA regime and that the pricing is currently determined on the basis of international rates.
According to him, their prices vary from market to market because of factors like freight charges, VAT and local levies.
