Despite the Gujarat government’s claims that there is sufficient stock of Remdesivir injection in the state, a long queue of people was seen outside Zydus Hospital in Ahmedabad and Kiran Hospital in Surat on Sunday to purchase the life-saving drug.

The development comes a day after the Gujarat BJP president CR Patil received flak on social media for announcing that the BJP will distribute 5,000 Remdesivir injections in Surat. Notably, the demand for the injection has considerably gone up as compared to supply in Gujarat due to the significant surge in COVID-19 cases.

People from Kalol, Vadodara, Nadiad, Anand, Modasa and Mehsana landed at Zydus Hospital in search of the injection. Media reports suggest that many hospitals were admitting COVID-19 patients with a rider that if the hospital is unable to manage Remdesivir, the patient’s relatives will have to manage the same.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who is in Patan, said that adequate amount of Remdesivir injection is available in government hospitals. The CM had earlier said in Rajkot that the state government had placed an order for 3 lakh injections from different manufacturers.

Ban on Remdesivir export

Amid an acute shortage of Remdesivir due to the surge in COVID-19 cases, the Union government on Sunday imposed a ban on the export of the lifesaving drug.

The government in a statement said, “Export of injection Remdesivir and Remdesivir Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients prohibited till the COVID-19 situation in the country improves.”

Use of Remdesivir

Remdesivir is considered a key anti-viral drug in the fight against COVID-19, especially in adult patients with severe complications. As COVID-19 cases are increased with each passing day, the demand for the drug has increased considerably.
