New Delhi: Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das has been given an extension of three years till December 2024, as per an official order.
This is the first time since the current BJP government came to power that an RBI Governor has got an extension. Earlier Governors either resigned (Urjit Patel), or went to academics (Raghuram Rajan).
As per an official communique, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the reappointment of Shaktikanta Das IAS as RBI Governor for three years from December 10, 2021. He was first appointed to his current post in 2018, succeeding Urjit Patel who resigned amid concerns over the Centre encroaching on the Central Bank’s turf.
Under Shaktikanta Das, the RBI strived to support the country’s economy during the disastrous Covid-19 pandemic.
His current term ends on December 10 this year.
