- Congress leader Sunil Jakhar reacts to AICC Punjab-incharge Harish Rawat’s statement
Chandigarh: Punjab Congress in-charge and All India Congress Committee spokesperson Harish Rawat’s statement saying next year’s Assembly elections will be fought under the leadership of state party president Navjyot Singh Sidhu is ‘baffling’, said Congress leader Sunil Jakhar on Monday.
He said the statement, coming right ahead of the swearing in of a new CM, was likely to undermine the latter’s authority.
“On the swearing-in day of Sh @Charnjit_channi as Chief Minister, Mr Rawats’s statement that “elections will be fought under Sidhu”, is baffling. It’s likely to undermine CM’s authority but also negate the very ‘raison d’être’ of his selection for this position,” he tweeted on Monday morning.
The Punjab Congress had on Sunday announced that Charanjit Singh Channi would succeed Captain Amarinder Singh as the chief minister of the state. Harish Rawat later said that Congress would fight Punjab elections in 2022 under Navjyot Singh Sidhu.
Jakhar’s remark was directed at this statement by Rawat.
Before the final announcement, Sunil Jakhar was among the top contenders for the post of Punjab CM. However, on Sunday, in a surprise announcement, the party said that Charanjit Singh Channi would be the new CM. He will be the 16th CM of Punjab.
As per reports, Channi is expected to meet his predecessor Amarinder Singh in the afternoon.
