Day after brutal rape, Mumbai woman succumbs to injuries

Mumbai: In a horrifying reminder of the rape of a woman on a bus in New Delhi in December 2012, a 34-year-old woman was brutally raped in Sakinaka area of Mumbai early on Friday. She succumbed to the injuries at a hospital on Saturday.

The police arrested an accused who was identified as Mohan Chouhan (45). He was booked for rape and attempt to murder, which will now be revised to murder.

As per available details, the Mumbai police control room had received a call at around 3.30 am on Friday about a woman being beaten by a man. When they reached, they found her lying in a pool of blood on Khairani Road, an otherwise busy road.

It appeared that she had been raped and tortured. In a grim reminder of the Delhi rape, the rapist had inserted an iron rod into her body.

She was rushed to Rajwadi hospital where she battled for life for 33 hours before succumbing to the grievous injuries caused by the assault.

As per primary investigation, blood stains had been found in a tempo parked on the roadside.

Condemning the assault, the National Commission for Women has called for immediate action in a time-bound manner and an FIR in the case.
