Following the death of Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, Piyush Goyal has been assigned additional charge of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Piyush Goyal currently holds the portfolio of minister of railways and minister of commerce and industry in the Narendra Modi government at the Centre.
“The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has directed that Piyush Goyal, Cabinet Minister, be assigned the charge of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, in addition to his existing portfolios,” said a communique from the President’s office.
Ram Vilas Paswan died on Thursday
Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan passed away in Delhi on Thursday. He was 74. Ram Vilas Paswan had recently undergone heart surgery in a Delhi hospital and was one of the most noted Dalit leaders in the country. He had been hospitalised due to illness for the last few days.
Chirag Paswan, son of Ram Vilas Paswan and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief, tweeted about the death on Thursday. “Papa …. Now you are not in this world but I know you are always with me wherever you are. Miss you Papa …” Chirag Paswan tweeted.
Earlier after his father’s operation, Chirag Paswan had said that Ram Vilas Paswan had to be operated on Saturday due to some sudden developments. He said another operation would be needed if the need arises.
Earlier the Lok Janshakti Party had announced its decision to go solo in the Bihar election.
Ram Vilas Paswan had also backed his son to take a call on LJP’s alliances for the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. “I stand firmly with every decision of his. I am confident that with his youthful thinking, Chirag will take the party and Bihar to new heights,” Paswan had said.
PM, President condoled death of Ram Vilas Paswan
Following the death of Ram Vilas Paswan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the Dalit leader’s death as a personal loss. He posted a series of tweets in this regard.
He said, “I am saddened beyond words. There is a void in our nation that will perhaps never be filled. Shri Ram Vilas Paswan Ji’s demise is a personal loss. I have lost a friend, valued colleague and someone who was extremely passionate to ensure every poor person leads a life of dignity.”
“Shri Ram Vilas Paswan Ji rose in politics through hard work and determination. As a young leader, he resisted tyranny and the assault on our democracy during the Emergency. He was an outstanding Parliamentarian and Minister, making lasting contributions in several policy areas.”
The PM added: “Working together, shoulder to shoulder with Paswan Ji has been an incredible experience. His interventions during Cabinet Meetings were insightful. From political wisdom, statesmanship to governance issues, he was brilliant. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti. “
Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind said: “In the demise of Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, the nation has lost a visionary leader. He was among the most active and longest-serving members of parliament. He was the voice of the oppressed, and championed the cause of the marginalized.”
“A firebrand socialist in youth, mentored by the likes of Jayaprakash Narayan during anti-Emergency movement, Paswan ji had enviable rapport with masses and he ardently strove for their welfare. Condolences to his family and supporters.”
