In what is a foot-in-mouth moment, Rajkot Mayor Binaben Acharya on Friday called the Rajkot hospital fire incident a ‘natural disaster’. The fire in the ICU of Uday Shivanand Hospital on Thursday late at night killed five people.
Binaben Acharya was quoted as saying: “This is a natural disaster. We have been spared the major loss of lives.”
Earlier Ahmedabad Mayor Bijal Patel had also made similar remarks after a fire and resultant blast in a textile unit in Pirana where chemicals were stored. Bijal Patel had at that time called it a common incident.
One of the sisters of the deceased had after the hospital fire said Rs4 lakh compensation will not bring back her brother, Sanjay Rathod, who was among the 5 people killed in the incident.
SC seeks report on Rajkot Hospital Fire incident
The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the fire incident in the ICU of the COVID-19 hospital at Rajkot which left five patients dead.
The court observed that these were repetitive incidents and no legitimate steps were being taken to prevent fires in hospitals. The court has also asked the Centre and state to list the steps taken to prevent hospital fires. It has also asked Gujarat to submit a report on the matter.
The hospital which is a COVID-19 centre had 33 COVID-19 patients. The ICU had 11 patients at the time of the incident. Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rpani has ordered an inquiry into the incident and announced a compensation of Rs4 lakh for each of the deceased’s kin.
This is the second major incident of fire in a COVId-19 hospital in Gujarat.
The ICU unit on the fourth floor of Shrey Hospital caught fire on August 6 in Ahmedabad at 3.30 am. The fire ended up killing eight people, all of them COVID-19 patients. The hospital was a dedicated COVID-19 facility.
