The Congress on Tuesday accepted the people’s verdict in the Rajkot Municipal Corporations elections where it lost badly.
Counting is underway for the 576 seats in the six municipal corporation elections that were held on Sunday. The BJP has already won four of them and is likely to emerge as the winner in the rest.
The Rajkot City Congress President Ashok Dangar has accepted the verdict and also tendered his resignation taking responsibility for the party’s poor performance.
While accepting the verdict, Dangar also said that the administration was misused to benefit the ruling BJP.
Rajkot had recorded 50.75% voter turnout for elections to the 18 wards. In all, 293 candidates were in the fray. Though counting is still on, BJP has won 56 seats so far and in 14 wards the entire panel of the party has won.
In one of the wards, a candidate had a close contest. BJP’s Ruchita Joshi won with a margin of just 11 votes. She was contesting from a seat in Ward no 16. Joshi of the BJP had 8,600 votes in her favour against the Congress’ Rasilaben Geriya who had 8,589 votes polled in her favour.
