New Delhi: AG Perarivalan, one of the convicts serving life term in the case of assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991, will finally walk free after 31 years in prison.

His release order on Wednesday came after the bench led by Justice LN Nageswara Rao invoked special powers of the Apex Court.

Perarivalan had been arrested for being complicit with the assassins by purchasing two 9-volt batteries that had been used in the bomb to kill Rajiv Gandhi.

He claimed he was unaware about the purpose for which the batteries had been procured.

He was sentenced to death in 1998 by an anti-terrorrism court, but the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 2014.

Perarivalan’s release could help other convicts, including Nalini and her husband Murugan, with their case for release from the jail.
