Rajinikanth to be conferred 51st Dadasaheb Phalke Award


Union information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar on Thursday announced that superstar Rajinikanth will be awarded the 51st Dadasaheb Phalke award—India’s highest film honour—on May 3. The award will be given to Rajinikanth for his outstanding contribution for the growth and development of Indian cinema.

Javadekar also made the announcement on Twitter. He said, “Happy to announce Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema Rajnikant ji. His contribution as actor, producer and screenwriter has been iconic,”

The Union minister also thanked the Jury that comprised of legendary singer Asha Bhosle, filmmaker Subhash Ghai, actor Mohanlal, music director and singer Shankar Mahadevan and actor Biswajit Chatterjee.

Notably, the actor, fondly known as Thalaiva by his fans, has been already conferred the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan in the past. The Dadasaheb Phalke award consists of a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus), a shawl and a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh.

PM congratulates Rajinikanth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the actor after his name was announced for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

In a tweet, PM Modi said, “Popular across generations, a body of work few can boast of, diverse roles and an endearing personality…that’s Shri @rajinikanth Ji for you. It is a matter of immense joy that Thalaiva has been conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Congratulations to him.”

Apart from the prime minister, several politicians, filmmakers and actors from the Hindi film industry as well as south Indian film industry congratulated the actor for the award.

Superstar Kamal Haasan wrote, “The superstar and my dear friend Rajinikanth, who proved that fans can be won by screen appearances, deserves it 100%.”

Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan made 16 films together since 1975’s Apoorva Raagangal, which was Rajinikanth’s debut. Their shared credits include Moondru Mudichu, 16 Vayathinile and Thillu Millu.
