Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra, as the Chancellor of Ajmer’s Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University, has suspended the varsity’s Vice-Chancellor (VC) Ram Pal Singh. The VC was trapped by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting bribe. He was accepting bribe from the private college operators affiliated to the university.

The ACB arrested the vice-chancellor and his bodyguard and driver. The latter were arrested after they were found involved in collecting over Rs 1 crore bribe. The VC and his staff have been remanded and are being interrogated by the ACB.

It’s the first case of such action against a vice-chancellor in the state.

Habitual offender

The vice-chancellor was asking for bribe from the private colleges affiliated to the university for granting these colleges the status of examination centre and increasing the seats. These 40 private colleges are located in Ajmer, Tonk, Bhilwara and Nagaur districts

The ACB upon inquiring found Rs 19.80 lakh in the bank account of the vice-chancellor. It also found Rs 4.90 lakh in the bank account of his bodyguard.

RP Singh, who belongs to Uttar Pradesh, was also found to be indulged in various corruption charges when he was the vice-chancellor of the Jodhpur’s Jai Narayan Vyas University.

Hence, the investigating agency is now examining the various papers from the university’s record to find out the irregularities committed by the vice-chancellor.

Complaint filed 3 months ago

The DG of ACB, MN Dinesh, had said, “The bribe was being taken at the residence of the vice-chancellor and that’s why he has been arrested. There was verification about the bribe complaint that was made to ACB three months ago. Through electronic surveillance, we have gathered a lot of evidence against the three accused. That is also being corroborated by their diaries and mobiles. Therefore, we are questioning all of them.”

In fact, ACB officials said the file on the case for which bribe was being taken was found on the table of the VC. The ACB has twice searched the VC’s office and has confiscated several other files and documents. The ACB has also seized the mobile and laptops of not only the VC but also his driver and security guards.
