A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was killed and three others were injured when a shell accidentally burst during an exercise. The incident happened in the Pokhran field range on Tuesday late evening when a unit of the BSF was involved in an exercise.
The shell fired from a 105 medium machine gun burst immediately after it was fired killing the jawan and injuring others. This is the second incident in the past four days when a shell burst after it was fired from a 105 mm gun. The killed jawan has been identified as Satish, who belonged to Uttar Pradesh.
The BSF has its own firing range in Kishangarh, but as the 105 mm gun has the capacity to hit the target from a distance of 17 km, the BSF chose Pokhran range as it is very long and wide and is safe for such target practices.
Gun developed by DRDO
Normally a 105 mm gun is used by the artillery regiments, but since BSF also possesses the 105 mm gun, it asked its jawans to do exercise with the gun. This gun has been developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment of Defence Research & Design Organisation (DRDO). It is a very lethal weapon for warfare.
This gun can be taken easily on hills, mountains and rough and high terrains. As it is light in weight, it could be taken by helicopter also from one place to the other. BSF has deployed such guns in Jammu & Kashmir. The BSF has ordered an inquiry into the incident. The injured jawans are treated in a hospital and they are all out of danger.
