Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) led by Raj Thackeray protested against giving Padma Shri to singer Adnan Sami, claiming he was not an “original Indian citizen”. Sami was one of the 118 people whose names were announced on Saturday for the Padma Shri awards, with the Ministry of Home Affairs list showing his home state as Maharashtra. Sami was granted Indian citizenship with effect from January 1, 2016 after his Pakistani passport expired on May 26, 2015 and was not renewed there.

Adnan Sami was born in Lahore, Pakistan. He first came to India on a tourist visa for a year on March 13, 2001. He insisted on obtaining citizenship of India on humanitarian grounds. Which was accepted by the central government.

On Saturday, MNS Cinema Wing chairman Amay Khopkar tweeted in Marathi that Adnan Sami was not an Indian. MNS believes that they should not be given any awards. We oppose Sammy’s decision to give Padma Shri. After all, why is it being hurried that Sami is being given the Padma Shri within 4 years of getting Indian citizenship? We demand that this honor be withdrawn from them.

On the one hand, Adnan Sami has thanked the Government of India after the award was announced. In a tweet he wrote, “The greatest moment for any Artiste is to be appreciated & recognised by his/her government. I am overwhelmed with infinite gratitude for being honoured with the ‘Padma Shri’ by the Government of India. It has been a 34 years musical journey..‘Bohot Shukriya’!!#PadmaAwards.”

On the other hand, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted, “Congratulations to the talented Sh @AdnanSamiLive on being honoured with a Padma Shri. He is one of the many who reposed faith in the constitution of India & were granted Indian citizenship. I hope Shaheen Bagh is listening. India doesn’t believe in taking away citizenships.”

On January 23, party president Raj Thackeray, in a meeting in Goregaon indicated the Hindu agenda as the basis of his party. After 2014, his party is constantly facing defeat.
