The court of Surat Magistrate H H Verma on 23rd March convicted accused Rahul Gandhi and sentenced him for 2 years on defamation case relating to Surat Modh Vanik community. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has challenged the judgement of the lower court in Surat Sessions Court.

The next hearing in the case has been scheduled on April, 13. According to the lawyer Rahul Gandhi need not have to remain present before the court next time.
Appeal, challenging the sentence to Rahul Gandhi in defamation case, will be heard on May, 3 before Surat Court. Rahul Gandhi has left Surat District Court after filing appeal challenging his conviction.
According to Gaurav Pandya, advocate representing Rahul Gandhi, an appeal has been filed before the court. The court has admitted the appeal. Court has granted bail to Rahul Gandhi. Next hearing is scheduled on April, 13.
Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot and Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu in the court. Earlier, 52-year-old Congress leader reached Surat on a scheduled commercial flight along with sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday.
Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said legal procedure is not any rally or an event for strength demonstration. No one can pressurize judiciary. Congress is the main opposition party and Rahul Gandhi is big leader of our party. This is not a political drama. We stand by him. Our advocates will make submission and the court will take its decision.
