Pushkar Singh Dhami is new Uttarakhand CM, will replace Tirath Singh

  • He is the third CM of the state in five years

Dehradun: Hours after Tirath Singh Rawat resigned from the post of the chief minister of Uttarakhand, Khatima MLA Pushkar Singh Dhami was chosen to take up the charge. Dhami’s name was proposed in the legislature party meeting which took place in Dehradun on Saturday. He is likely to take oath on Saturday itself.

Tirath Singh had submitted his resignation late no Friday night to Governor Baby Rani Maurya. A constitutional provision that required an office-bearer to get elected to the legislature within six months was cited as the reason behind his decision. He is an MP from Pauri Garhwal, but needed to be elected as an MLA to continue being the CM. His exit came at a crucial point as the state will go to polls next year.

Dhami will be under tremendous pressure to steer the party to victory next year. His name had been doing round ever since Tirath Singh offered to resign from his post. According to sources, the meeting was only a formality and that Dhami’s name had been decided by the party leadership.

Dhami will be the 3rd chief minister of Uttarakhand in this term of the BJP government after Trivendra Singh Rawat and Tirath Singh Rawat.
