Chandigarh: Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi will attend the swearing-in ceremony of Charanjit Singh Channi as the new chief minister of Punjab in Chandigarh on Monday. The swearing-in will take place at 11 am.
The confirmation comes after earlier reports that Rahul Gandhi was unlikely to attend the ceremony.
Charanjit Singh Channi’s name was announced as the new CM of Punjab a day after Captain Amarinder Singh stepped down from the post on Saturday.
“It gives me immense pleasure to announce that Charanjit Singh Channi has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab,” AICC general secretary and the party’s in-charge of Punjab affairs Harish Rawat had said on Sunday.
Channi is a three-time MLA from Chamkaur Sahib. He is the first Dalit CM of Punjab. He headed tourism and cultural affairs, technical education and industrial training and employment generation in the Amarinder Singh government.
The new CM may have two deputy CMs, Rawat has indicated. He has also said that Congress will fight the 2022 polls under the state’s party president Navjyot Singh Sidhu.
