Punjab govt facing flak for allegedly selling Covaxin to pvt hospitals, SAD demands probe

The Punjab government is facing flak over accusations that it diverted COVID-19 vaccines to private hospitals at hefty margins. With elections due next year, the criticism over the issue can severely dent the Congress party’s image.

SAD demands probe

Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal has alleged that the Captain Amarinder Singh government has resold 40,000 doses of Covaxin at hefty margins. Badal alleged that the doses were purchased at Rs 400 per jab and sold to private hospitals for Rs 1,060. The jabs were then administered by hospitals at Rs 1,560 per dose.

Badal also took to Twitter to rake up the issue. He said, “[email protected]_Dal demands a high court probe into diversion of vaccines to private players at hefty margins to create artificial shortage. Vaccines procured @ Rs 400 /dose sold to private hosp for Rs 1060 and are available to common man at Rs 1560. This is a scam @drharshvardhan.”

“Congress govt playing with people’s lives. Punjab health minister @BalbirSinghMLA should be sacked. @CsPunjab Vini Mahajan should also not act like a market salesman for private institutions by encouraging people to get vaccinated at inflated rates.”

“@RahulGandhi who has demanded free vaccines for all should tell what he has to say to a common man forced to pay Rs 6,000 to Rs 9,000 for a single vaccine dose for his family. He should tell if he supports Punjab govt decision to force ppl to get vaccine doses for Rs 1560.”

“It is immoral for Punjab govt to profit from sale of #COVIDVaccines. People being punished during a time of economic slowdown. Cong govt has abdicated its resp towards public welfare by corporatizing vaccine distribution. The entire #COVID management exercise stands exposed.”

BJP takes a dig

With Rahul Gandhi repeatedly criticising the Centre over its vaccine policy, the BJP also did not leave the opportunity to take a dig at the Congress leader. Union minister Prakash Javadekar said, “Rahul Gandhi should first look after his state rather than giving lectures to others. Punjab has been provided with more than 1.40 lakh doses of Covaxin at Rs 400 and they’ve given it to 20 private hospitals at Rs 1000,”

What Punjab govt said

Punjab health minister BS Sidhu on Friday said his department has no control over vaccines and promised an investigation into the matter. The minister said, “I do not have control over vaccines. I just look over treatment, testing, sampling of COVID-19 and vaccination camps. We will definitely set an inquiry.”
