- Amarinder Singh had conveyed his displeasure at the ‘humiliation’ to Congress president Sonia Gandhi earlier in the day
Chandigarh: Shortly after reportedly conveying his displeasure at the humiliation meted out to him, Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as the chief minister of Punjab. He submitted his resignation to Governor Banwarilal Purohiit at Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh on Saturday afternoon.
“My father submitting his resignation to HE the Governor Sahib of Punjab (sic),” tweeted his son Raninder. He attached a photo of Amarinder with the Governor.
Amarinder Singh later said he had taken the decision after talking to Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the morning. He pointed out that the legislative party meeting scheduled in the evening was the third of its kind and that he felt humiliated.
All India Congress Committee general secretary Harish Rawat had announced on Friday that an urgent meeting of the Congress Legislative Party in Punjab would be held on Saturday evening. He said AICC had received representations from several MLAs seeking the meeting.
The rift within the state unit of Congress has been widening with each passing day as clashes between CM Amarinder Singh and state Congress president Navjyot Singh Sidhu continue in the open.
