New Delhi: The Punjab Assembly elections, earlier scheduled to be held on February 14, will now be held on February 20. The rescheduling has been in view of a festival.

In a release on Monday, the Election Commission said it had received several representations from state government, political parties and other organisations drawing attention regarding movement of a large number of devotees from Punjab to Varanasi for participation in Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Jayanti celebrations, on February 16.

“They have also brought to the notice that a large number of devotees start moving for Varanasi around a week before the day of celebration and keeping the poll day on 14th February 2022 will deprive large number of electors from voting,” the EC added.

“In view of this, they have requested to shift the poll date few days after 16th February 2022.  Commission has also taken inputs from State Government and Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab in this regard,” it said.

The revised date of notification of Punjab Assembly elections will now be January 25, while the last date of nomination will be February 1.

The form scrutiny will be on February 2 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination will be February 4.

The elections will be held on February 20. Counting of votes will be on March 10.
