Merrut: Today Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were stopped by the cops from entering Merrut to meet the families of those killed in protests against the CAA last week. They requested the cops but were denied the entry.The Gandhis were stopped near the Partapur police station.
“We asked the police if they have any order, they didn’t show us any order but they just said you can please go back,” said Rahul Gandhi.
Violence took place in Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). During this 5 protesters died in Merrut alone.And when the Gandhis were going to meet the victim family the administration sent both of them back by citing Section 144, after which they returned from Partapur.
On Friday, protesters staged violent demonstrations in Meerut after the Friday Prayer. Where they had burnt vehicles and threw stones at the police, who used lathi charge and tear gas shells. Internet has been suspended in Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Bulandshahar and Saharanpur after the violence.
Later Congress leaders Imran Masood and Pankaj Malik met the victims families. A Congress spokesperson said that the Gandhis will again try to meet the families on Wednesday. A four-member Trinamool Congress delegation, which was scheduled to meet the grieving families of those killed in Uttar Pradesh during protests over the new citizenship law, was also detained at Lucknow airport on Sunday afternoon.
