Prime Minister Narendra Modi covered a lot of issues in his 26-minute long Independence Day speech from the Red Fort. The speech came as the nation battles a COVID-19 pandemic and economic slowdown.

The speech on the occasion of India’s 74th Independence Day touched upon Atmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India, COVID-19 warriors among others.

Here are the highlights

 1) COVID-19

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that oOn behalf of the entire nation, I want to thank all COVID-19 warriors who have worked tirelessly to serve the nation. Many have lost their lives and the nation salutes them.

Scientists are working towards a COVID-19 vaccine and three Indian vaccines are in different testing stages.

As soon as scientists give a green signal, the country is prepared to produce it in large numbers.

We have already built a roadmap to ensure that vaccines reach every Indian in the least amount of time.

 2) Atmanirbhar Bharat/infrastructure

India has lakhs of challenges to become atmanirbhar but it also has 130 crore solutions.

Let us take a pledge to make ‘vocal for local’ the mantra of the nation.

We are focusing on comprehensive, multi-modal infrastructure development for India to grow at a fast pace.

About 7,000 projects of different sectors have been identified to bring a new revolution in infrastructure.

We are connecting villages with the internet, bringing technology to small business and ration shops, giving benefits and freedom to farmers.

We have removed the restrictions on where a farmer can sell and now they can sell where they get the best price.

We are also working on Jal Jeevan Mission to ensure potable drinking water is available in every tap in every home.

We are also working to ensure a home for every Indian

3) Education and digital India

We have recently introduced a new education policy that focuses on research and development to make India a key R&D destination for the world.

In the next 1,000 days, villages across the country will have optical fibre connections available.

In the coming 1,000 days, every village in the country will be connected including thousands of islands.

A submarine fibre optic cable has been launched to digitally connect Andaman and Nicobar Islands with the rest of India

In the next 1,000 days, Lakshadweep will also be connected with high-speed internet.

4) National Digital Health Mission

We are launching a National Digital Health Mission which will be. completely technology-based.

Every Indian will get a Health ID card and every time you visit a doctor or pharmacy the information will be put in in your health card on a national scale.

One Health ID will have the information on every test, every disease, which medicine was prescribed to you by which doctor, what the reports were.

5) LAC standoff/neighbors

Be it terrorism or expansionism, India will stand up to both and defeat it. From LoC to LAC, whenever India has been challenged, our soldiers have given a fitting response in a language they understand.

For India, neighbours are not only the ones we share a border with, but also emotions and values.
