Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary opposed the name of Praveen Sood for the post. Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary objected to the process and demanded to initiate a fresh process. Besides Praveen Sood, the names of Madhya Pradesh DGP Sudhir Saxena and senior IPS Taj Hasan were also shortlisted for the post of CBI director.
According to sources, the DoPT had earlier sent a list of around 115 names for the post of CBI chief, including some officers who were not shortlisted. Congress leader Chowdhary raised the issue and argued that he did not find service records and personal details of officers and other documents in the list.
A 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Sood originally hails from Himachal Pradesh and is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi, Indian Institute of Management (IIM)-Bangalore, and Syracuse University in New York. His first posting, after joining IPS, was in Mysore in 1989. He returned to Mysore as Commissioner of Police between 2004 and 2007.
Sood will replace outgoing CBI director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, whose fixed tenure ends on May 25. He will go on to chair the top central agency post for a period of two years.
