Pranab Mukherjee’s condition remains unchanged


Amid rumours of the demise of former President Pranab Mukherjee, the Army’s Research and Referral Hospital on Thursday clarified that his condition remains unchanged. The hospital said Pranab Mukherjee is in deep comatose.

The former president was admitted to the hospital on August 10. A surgery was carried out for the removal of a clot in his brain. He also tested positive for COVID-19.

The former president’s treating doctors said his vital parameters are stable. They added that he continues to remain on ventilator support.

“The condition of Shri Pranab Mukherjee remains unchanged this morning. He is deeply comatose with stable vital parameters and he continues to be on ventilatory support,” a statement from the hospital said.

Pranab Mukherjee was the thirteenth President of India from 2012 to 2017.

Family refutes death rumours

Amid rumours, his son and former MP Abhijit Mukherjee said, “My father Shri Pranab Mukherjee is still alive and haemodynamically stable.”

“Speculations and fake news being circulated by reputed Journalists on social media. It clearly reflects that media in India has become a factory of fake news,” he said on Twitter.

The former president’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee tweeted, “Rumours about my father are false. Request, especially to the media, not to call me as I need to keep my phone free for any updates from the hospital.”

Tested COVID-19 positive

Former President Pranab Mukherjee on August 10 informed that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Pranab Mukherjee took to Twitter to make the announcement.

In fact, he requested people who were in close contact or had come in contact with him in the past few days to self-isolate. Also, he had requested them to get themselves tested for COVID-19.

The former President had visited the hospital for a separate procedure. But, as a norm, he was tested there for COVID-19. And, his test reports came positive.

He had tweeted: “On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self-isolate. And get tested for COVID-19”.
