Police inspector commits suicide in Gandhinagar secretariat

A police inspector working in the security branch of the secretariat on Saturday committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver. The inspector Pritesh J Patel ended his life in his car in the parking lot in front of the home department in the secretariat complex.

While the motive behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained, the incident has already sparked a discussion in the police circle. Patel is survived by his wife and two children.

Family alerted police after cop did not return home

According to his family, the 41-year-old cop had gone to work in the secretariat as usual. However, the family became tensed after the cop did not return from work to his apartment in Sargasan in Gandhinagar. After waiting for some time for the cop to return, the family immediately informed the police. After being approached by the family, police immediately swung into action and launched an investigation into the matter.

Police found the police inspector’s body in parking lot

Police officials reached the secretariat branch in Sachivalay to trace Pritesh Patel. However, they found his body in a parking lot. Prima facie, police said that the cop committed suicide by shooting himself.

According to police sources, Pritesh Patel had joined the force in 2008. He had worked in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar districts. A native of Bayad in Aravalli, he was living in a flat in Sargasan. He was posted in the Gandhinagar secretariat security branch for the last 6-7 months. Recently, he had sold his house in Bayad and shifted to Gandhinagar. His father is involved in the tobacco business.

Other incidents of cops committing suicide

Pritesh Patel’s suicide is not a standalone incident. There have been several such incidents in the past as well.

On August 12, a woman police constable committed suicide at the police headquarters in Gujarat’s Bharuch district. Similarly, a police constable working with Dakor police station in Kheda had committed suicide in May this year. This apart, a sub-inspector deployed at the Vadodara crime branch’s anti-chain snatching squad had committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver on September 16, 2018.
