A head constable in the city succumbed to Covid19 making him the first such fatality due to the disease in the police department. Head constable Bharatji Somaji, posted at the Krishnanagar police station, who had tested positive for Corona and was under treatment, died due to the disease on Monday. Ahmedabad police commissioner, Ashish Bhatia also expressed his condolence to the family of the disease in a tweet.
The cop was under treatment in Civil Hospital in Gandhinagar. After he tested positive, the ASI of the same police station, Ranjitsinh had also tested positive. Another cop on duty at the same place had also been found to be corona infected and so the entire staff of the police station was put under home quarantine as a precautionary measure.
“Today, Bharatsinh Somaji b.no 8090 of Krishnanagarps passed away fighting Corona. It is a great loss to the police force. Deepest condolences to the family. May almighty God give strength to the family to bear this loss. May his soul rest in peace,” Bhatia tweeted later.
Several cops in the city and state have tested positive for the disease, many of them put on duty in containment zones. Some also contracted the disease after the accused in some cases they were investigating had tested positive during arrest or detention.
