Statue of Unity: PM Modi flags 8 trains to boost tourism


In a bid to boost tourism and increase connectivity to the Statue of Unity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday flagged off eight trains that will connect Gujarat’s Kevadia to various parts of the country. Notably, these new trains will be operated from Ahmedabad, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Rewa, Chennai, Dadar and Pratapnagar.

The virtual event was attended by railway minister Piyush Goyal, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath and Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray.

PM Modi also inaugurated the Dabhoi Chandod converted broad gauge railway line, Chandod Kevadia new broad gauge rail line, newly electrified Pratapnagar Kevadia section and the new station buildings of Dabhoi, Chandod and Kevadia.

Notably, PM Modi had inaugurated the Statue of Unity in October 2018, which was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 143 birth anniversary. Since the inauguration, several steps have been taken by the Gujarat government to promote tourism in the area. Also, millions of people have visited the statue since its inauguration boosting the local economy.

Vista-dome coaches for Ahmedabad-Kevadia route

One of the eight trains that were flagged off by the prime minister was the Ahmedabad-Kevadia Jan Shatabdi Express. This train will be equipped with ‘Vista-dome’ coaches. These modern coaches have a bigger viewing area and a mostly transparent roof.

PM Modi tweets

PM Modi took to Twitter to announce the last mile connectivity to the Statue of Unity by railway. He said, “You can now reach #StatueOfUnityByRail!” He hailed the development as a “historic day”.

Apart from PM Modi, railway minister Piyush Goyal and chief ministers of Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh also hailed the development as “historic”.
