PM Modi to skip Holi Milan programmes amid coronavirus scare

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to abide by the advice issued by experts worldwide to reduce mass gatherings to avoid the spread of the deadly coronavirus and hence, he will not be participating in any Holi milan programme. Modi informed the same on his twitter account on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister wrote: “Experts across the world have advised to reduce mass gatherings to avoid the spread of COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus. Hence, this year I have decided not to participate in any Holi Milan programme”. While the tweet might disappoint his followers, it also indicates the gravity of the situation and the Prime Minister’s sensitivity towards it.

Meanwhile, it seems there is no end to the deadly coronavirus scare that has started spreading its tentacles in the country, with more positive cases being reported from the national capital. Fourteen Italian nationals and one Indian out of the 21 people quarantined at an ITBP facility in Delhi have tested positive for the virus.

However, in a matter of relief, the six people from Noida, who have been put under observation for suspected coronavirus infection after they attended a birthday party hosted by an infected Delhi resident, have tested negative. Despite the negative test results, the authorities are ensuring that all of them are quarantined at home for the next 14 days to rule out chances of the virus spreading.

Delhi’s health minister Satyendar Jain on Tuesday said government is taking all possible steps to keep the city safe. He also informed that isolation wards are being readied in 25 hospitals, which includes 19 state-run and six private hospitals. With the coronavirus scare fast spreading across the country, there is an unusual shortage of masks and hand sanitisers in medical stores, especially those operating in the national capital.

Apart from the airports which are on high alert and screening passengers from 21 countries arriving in India, around 459 passengers of an Italian luxury cruise ship ‘Costa Victoria’ docked in Kochi have been screened for symptoms of coronavirus.
